The Painted Veil by Somerset Maugham

This short but complex novel explores physical attraction and marital infidelity against the backdrop of late colonial China in the 1920's. A film version with Naomi Watts and Edward Norton, pictured above, was made in 2006. The late empire was especially rich for the British novel (Maugham, Conrad, Forster, Greene) and Maugham is a consummate stylist and story teller.
