A miscellany of music on the theme of love and parting, ranging from the sixteenth century to the present day
About this Event

For its summer concert The Open University Choir presents a miscellany of short pieces, unaccompanied and piano-accompanied, for men’s, women’s and mixed voices. While several of the texts are drawn from the Elizabethan period, the music travels across the centuries, ranging from two sacred pieces by sixteenth-century Scottish composer Robert Johnson, in a new edition by Elaine Moohan of The Open University’s music department, to the present day, with the first performance of Songs of Parting by Open University Choir member Stephen Potter.

Along the way we present a selection from Charles Villiers Stanford’s Six Elizabethan Pastorals, Edward Elgar’s O Happy Eyes and American composer Amy Beach’s Three Shakespeare Choruses. This eclectic programme also includes pieces by lesser-known figures such as William Bowie, another Scot. Themes of love and parting predominate, with some naughty nautical diversions.

The concert will take place on 27 June from 1pm–2pm in the Hub Theatre on The Open University's Walton Hall campus.
