Key Subjects

2024 has already been a challenging year with northern schools facing increased pressures (over other regions) in:

  • Funding Shortages: Many schools in the North receive less funding than those in other parts of the country, limiting their ability to invest in resources, facilities, and staff.
  • Challenging Recruitment and Retention: Addressing the challenge of Northern schools struggle to attract and retain more high-quality teachers and staff, particularly in remote areas.
  • Social and Economic Disadvantage: Many schools in the North serve students from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, which can lead to additional challenges related to student engagement, academic achievement, and wellbeing.
  • Ageing Infrastructure and Facilities: Some schools in the North may have outdated or inadequate facilities, which can impact student learning and wellbeing. Additionally, schools in remote areas may face challenges related to transportation and access to resources.
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing: Northern schools, like schools across the UK, are seeing an increase in mental health and wellbeing concerns among their staff and students.
