The works are by Jogen Chowdhury, with insights by Sranjana Kaikini.
‘If you wish for a metaphysics to complete this poetics, then, it will be the atheist[ic] splendor of life in the dead space of an inanimate and mechanical universe.’
Mallarmé Materialist , Frederic Jameson
Mallarme’s poetry was known to develop new linguistic content that required new reading strategies. In calling Mallarme’s idealism “a gesture of defiance in a ‘meaningless Newtonian system’, Jameson offers a radically displaced reading of Mallarmé’s poetry which refrains from making a point and proclaims itself through its forms of present and absent words.
Jogen Chowdhury’s latest works in metal hold space for radical semiotic displacements.
To call them reconstructions, would fall short of capturing this form of creation that takes the copy as its fractal recursive point of origination. Jogen Choudhury’s sculptures, in these distinct renderings, present us a way to assemble and disassemble the most recognised site of a person, namely the face and in extension, the head.
These limited edition sculptures, rendered in bronze and zinc, materially congeal Choudhury’s longstanding interest for lines in time and space and his interest in folk imaginations. A face that comes apart and together in a singular moment - strewn in suspension. Call it the suspension of a natural standpoint or the suspension of meaning-making itself; with this compositional move, Chowdhury beckons us to take stock of the illusory nature of persons and their markers. Elements from several faces across his works come together to form a composite face - perhaps a composite self-portrait of everyone and no-one?
