About this Event
The Garland Unit of the NAACP was chartered on July 6, 1984 with 127 members. Ms. Goldie Locke served as founding president and Mr. Johnnie O. Steadham was first vice president, along with 18 Executive Committee members. Two of the original 18 board members are still active today: Mr. Chester Johnson currently serves as chair of Legal Redress and Ms. Carol Montgomery is active on several committees.
One of the high profile cases first handled by the NAACP Garland Unit involved Mr. Lenell Geter, the African American engineer featured on 60 Minutes who was falsely convicted of a crime in Greenville, Texas. He was initially sentenced to life before the conviction was overturned by the judicial system.
Mr. Geter will deliver the September 14th keynote address during the Unit's celebration of rendering volunteer service to the Greater Garland Community for the last 40 years!
