Her non-fiction writing looks to bring unknown or forgotten Black history to the fore through oral history, archival research, and reporting.
Mitchell’s debut, Prose to the People: A Celebration of Black Bookstores, earned an Outstanding Contribution to Publishing Citation from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association and a St. Louis Mercantile Library Prize Honorable Mention, was an NPR Books We Love honoree, and received a New York Times “Up Close” feature in addition to being a Black Bookstore Coalition bestseller. The Bibliographical Society of America, Emory University Rose Library, Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar, and NPR have supported her work through various fellowships.
Mitchell’s words have appeared in Ms. Magazine, Essence, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, The Bitter Southerner, Rewire News, In These Times, and NextCity.org among others.
