About this Event
This April, mystery and carefully layered characters blend in such a way in Agatha Christie’s THE MOUSETRAP that the audience is constantly, actively challenged to work through the curious puzzles of the play. Set in a remote country manor in the middle of a raging, nighttime snowstorm, this tale shows Christie at the top of her game, plausibly toying with our expectations and perceptions.
“Whodunits” aren’t for everyone, and they can often be trite or poorly constructed. But Christie’s work is consistently thoughtful, fresh, carefully crafted, and a delight to watch unfold. It’s also dangerous and difficult, for the best “whodunits,” including hers, are more than simply mysteries. They are brimming with dark grief and anger over such trauma as abuse, violence, illness, and—in the case of THE MOUSETRAP—childhood neglect and abandonment. And so, what begins as a seemingly lighthearted “cozy mystery” on a snowy night in a remote English manor-turned-bed-and-breakfast mutates slowly into detective fiction and then, ultimately, into domestic horror—a serious transformation for us to grapple with.
If you’re a fan of NCIS shows, Sherlock, or even Scooby Doo, you don’t want to miss this genre-shaping work by the mastermind mystery writer Agatha Christie!
