The Modern Folk is a borderless musical recording and improvisational group based mostly out of the Cowlitz and Clackamas land currently known as Portland, Oregon. They make folk music, when and where they can. A loose collective spearheaded by Portland’s Josh Moss — inveterate champion of underground music and well-travelled denizen of New Weird America.
Through dozens of releases on some of the coolest labels around (@eiderdownrecords , @warhenrecords , @ramble_records , @echodelickrecords ), The Modern Folk has mined traditional American music and filtered it through psychedelic music of all stripes — Fahey meets Berman meets Beefheart with Bigfoot there, too, rounding out the crew. They are joined by Star Family Singers (ID) and Pythias Braswell.
