'The Mirror,' a 1997 Iranian meta-film marvel from celebrated director Jafar Panahi, explores the interplay of imagination and reality. The narrative film, screening at San Francisco's Roxie Theater on Sunday August 15 from 2-4pm, is introduced by visual artist and filmmaker Alison O'Daniel and is co-produced by McEvoy Foundation for the Arts.
Tickets, on sale now, are $9-10: https://www.mcevoyarts.org/event/the-mirror/
When her mother is late to pick her up from school, first-grader Mina (Mina Mohammad Khani) takes matters into her own hands, navigating the public transportation and bustling traffic of Tehran on a precarious adventure of the everyday. What begins as a charming child's-eye portrait of Iranian society soon reveals itself to be something even richer and more surprising. Like Panahi's previous film, 1995's 'The White Balloon,' 'The Mirror' takes the kid-on-a-quest genre prevalent in Iranian cinema in new and unexpected directions while painting a richly textured portrait of modern Tehran and the people who inhabit it.
O'Daniel works across sound, narrative, sculpture, installation and performance and is an Assistant Professor of Film at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. The Roxie Theater, a San Francisco Mission District landmark since 1912, serves as a forum for the independent film community and reflects the spirit of the diverse Bay Area population.
'The Mirror' is presented by O'Daniel in conjunction with 'Hearing Aids,' the daily program of short films she guest curates at McEvoy Arts that consider a new sensory sensitivity to a world emerging from the pandemic, and is one of several live events organized by McEvoy Arts that amplify the themes of its exhibition 'Next to You.' Comprised of artworks from the McEvoy Family Collection, 'Next to You' celebrates the joy, vitality, and healing power of the performing arts, singing a farewell ballad to a strange and challenging time while looking forward to a reunited future.
