The Minefield for Campus Free Expression When It's About Israel and Gaza

James L. Turk

Jim is Director of the Centre for Free Expression (CFE) at Toronto Metropolitan University. CFE’s work focuses the importance of freedom of expression and intellectual freedom for making possible the informed public discourse which is the foundation for genuine democracy. CFE’s priorities are public education, law reform, advocacy, research, advisory services, policy analysis, and assistance to courts on matters related to expressive freedom.

Prior founding and leading CFE, Jim was Executive Director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers. Previously he was Associate Professor of sociology at the University of Toronto where he taught Canadian Studies and headed the Labour Studies Program at University College. He has also held several senior positions in the Canadian trade union movement. In January, Jim was honoured by being named the recipient of the Inaugural Canadian Federation of Library Associations Intellectual Freedom Award for outstanding contributions to intellectual freedom in Canada.

Jim has a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, a M.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, an A.B. from Harvard University, and was a Knox Fellow at the University of Cambridge.
