Join us for a family art drop-in sessions with the Mills Archive resident artists
Join Jelly and The Mills Archive for a drop-in family art workshop!
Meet our current Artists in Residence at the Mills Archive, Jacky Oliver, and Matt Hulse. Explore the archive and learn about their 'Reading emPOWERed' project with the Jelly team and Mills Archive. Participate in a family friendly art workshop inspired by the artists' exploration of the archives.
This is a fun family drop-in sessions aimed at ages 5 to 11years. Younger and older children are welcome. Located in the Hall of Watlington House, 4 artists will introduce families to creative activities to explore and think about wind and water power.
More info about the project and artists residency at The Mills Archive:
The Mills Archive, based at Watlington House is collaborating with Jelly on an exciting project called Reading emPOWERed which draws on the Archive’s material and covers the history of wind and water power around the world, including the local area. Wind and water power has fed and clothed us all for thousands of years, and the subject provides opportunities to learn about where our food comes from, how renewable energy has been used over time and how this is now being explored to help address current issues like climate change. This project will provide new education programmes on wind and waterpower with local and cultural context, and will offer pathways to understand how the heritage relates to Reading’s past and present.
This free workshop is made possible due to funding by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, made possible by National Lottery players
Our workshops and events are subsidised and in most cases we are able to offer our workshops for a nominal fee. If you are able we have an option to donate. All donations help us to continue our work to make space for art for everyone every day.

Where are you based?
This workshop is taking place at The Mills Archive, Watlington House. The workshop is in the hall located at the rear of the house in the gardens. Access to the hall is via the gate to carpark on South St.
Be sure to check the address on your ticket.
Our home is located within Broad St Mall. You can find us on the first floor. We are the last unit before the toilets and exit to the carpark. If you get lost please ask any Broad St Mall security guard and they will direct you.
If I cannot make my paid workshop, can I transfer my ticket to another event or get a refund?
This is a free workshop. Registering your interest in this event helps to prepare art materials and anticipate numbers. If you can no longer make it please return your ticket. We do not offer refunds.
Our free community workshops and festival workshops are often made possible due to funding by the organisers. These workshops are popular and run at capacity. If you have selected a free ticket and are no longer able to attend please return your ticket so it is able to go to people on our waiting list. At busy times there may be a short wait at the workshop table and make sure you allow plenty of time to join us.
As a charity we rely on donations and ticket sales to pay our artists and models. We always keep ticket costs to a minimum and when possible offer a limited number of tickets as a ‘pay what you can’ and a donation option if you are able to pay more.
