The Mikado is one of the most famous and one of the best loved of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas.Nanki-Poo, The Mikado’s son, has run away to escape an arranged marriage with the elderly Katisha. Nanki -Poo is in love with Yum-Yum, the ward of Ko-Ko, who is The Lord High Executioner. Nanki-Poo cannot marry Yum-Yum because Ko-Ko has decided to marry her himself!
The Mikado orders Ko-Ko to behead somebody (anybody he doesn’t care who) or Ko-Ko’s own head will roll. Nanki-Poo seems determined to take his own life rather than live without Yum-Yum, so to save his own head from being chopped off, Ko-Ko persaudes Nanki-Poo to be his substitute. Nanki-Poo agrees as long as he can enjoy one month of married bliss with Yum-Yum before he is beheaded.
As the wedding celebrations begin, a law is discovered, decreeing that a condemned man's wife must be buried alive with his corpse! Not surprisingly Yum-Yum has a change of heart and tells Nanki-Poo she can no longer marry him, as ‘it’s such a stuffy death!’ To add to the confusion, Katisha arrives to claim Nanki-Poo and demands he marries her!
With a concert style ensemble and our principals inhabiting their roles in a staged performance, we are excited to be performing this production exclusively in beautiful Manor Houses.
