For the Indigenous Mentawai people of Siberut Island, life is a continuous conversation with the spirit world — daily life, every ritual, every hunt, and every healing act rooted in maintaining balance between body and soul, and harmony between the physical and spiritual realms. In this photo presentation, Toine invites you into that world through rare images captured over thirty-five years, with a focus on shamanism and spiritual healing.
We will enter the uma (the traditional Mentawai clan house), join the kerei (the Mentawai shamans) in their ceremonies, and witness moments where body and soul are brought back into alignment. Many of these scenes — trance dances, ancestral invocations, the initiation of new shamans — offer a glimpse into one of the world’s last living forest-based traditions.

About Toine
Toine first came to Indonesia in 1988 as a biology student, to study primates in Gunung Leuser National Park. After graduating, he moved permanently to Indonesia in 1990 and visited Siberut for the first time that same year. A Dutch-born explorer and photographer, he has made Indonesia his home ever since.
His first encounter with the Mentawai brought him deep into the Siberut rainforest, where he met a community still living by their ancestral traditions. Drawn to their warmth and way of life, he spent much of his early years with them. Living in one family’s household, he learned the language, joined daily routines, and came to understand Mentawai culture as inseparable from the forest.
In time, the family adopted him — an intimate bond that opened the door to ceremonies, rituals, and a deeper understanding of Mentawai cosmology and culture.
For the past five years, Toine has lived with his Indonesian wife, Mega, on a mixed-use plantation on the slopes of Mount Batukaru in Bali.
