About this Event

The Mask: Embodying the Faces Within

Join the Pacifica Graduate Institute Community Club for a day of creative exploration as we create masks and explore the psychological insights they offer. Drawing on traditions from ancient Greek theater to Jungian theory, we'll come together to imagine, create, and embody original masks while reflecting on the personas we present to the world. Together, we'll explore how masks can both conceal and reveal hidden aspects of ourselves.

The day will begin with an opening discussion on the archetypal nature of masks, followed by time to create and design your own mask individually. All materials will be provided. We will have a lunch break during which we can mingle and come together in community. Light lunch options will be provided. Please feel welcome to bring snacks or a personal lunch if desired. In the late afternoon, we will engage in an archetypal theatre process, exploring the embodiment of the masks we create. Through movement, voice, gesture, and presence, we'll explore how these crafted faces invite us to embody different aspects of the psyche.

Through this combined process of making and embodying, we will engage with timeless questions about identity, shadow, and transformation. Whether you're drawn to the protective function of masks, their role in ritual and performance, or their capacity to help us encounter what lies beneath the surface, this workshop offers space for hands-on creation as well as individual and communal psychological exploration.

No artistic experience necessary; bring your curiosity and openness to the creative process. Students and candidates from the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program at Pacifica Graduate Institute will facilitate the workshop.
