About this Event
In December 2022, Winter Storm Elliott unleashed a devastating impact across much of the Eastern U.S., claiming the lives of at least 60 individuals, with at least 47 casualties in Buffalo alone. The brutal storm resulted in over 1.5 million power outages nationwide, with more than 150,000 Western New Yorkers left in the dark. Further downstate, Con Edison declared a “gas emergency,” a near-catastrophic situation that threatened to disrupt gas service to large portions of their customer base. The severity of the weather was so extreme that firefighters across the state found themselves trapped while attempting to respond to critical emergencies.
Weather conditions vary drastically across the state – from the bustling streets of New York City to the Capital District, and all the way up to Erie and Niagara Counties where Elliott hit Buffalo and surrounding areas the hardest. This stark contrast underscores the need for a more responsible approach to emissions reductions that prioritizes the diverse needs of customers across the entire state. Circumstances and situations differ between upstate and downstate where one solution may not fit the needs.
Join the three dissenting voices against the NYS Climate Action Council’s Scoping Plan for a compelling discussion on an “all-of-the-above" approach to reducing emissions. Together with The Martin Group and our hosts at The Bull Moose Club, we’ll explore how to balance the growth of weather-dependent renewables with the consistency of natural gas and low-carbon fuels supplied through secure, existing delivery systems. As concerns voiced in December 2022, just five days before Winter Storm Elliott hit, have become reality in some cases, our panel of experienced voices from New York’s energy sector hopes that the board members of New York State’s Energy Plan will consider the concerns as they develop a new roadmap and scope.
