The Hereford Mappa Mundi is a magnificent world map from the Middle Ages. Dating from 1300 CE, it represents the known world, complete with magical, historical, Biblical, and Classical stories all shown existing side by side. The map is covered in illustrations that reveal the interweaving of myth and reality.
Professor Simone Marshall brings the mappa mundi to life, explaining its meaning, highlighting some of its errors, and exploring the worldview that we glimpse in its thousands of
illustrations of strange and mysterious beasts.
Come up to the Friends' Room after the talk for a cuppa and chat – on Level 3 in the Nature Gallery, near Autahi the leopard seal.
