Directed by Co-Artistic Leader Nicolas Haigh, this program offers virtuosic choral works Bach taught his students alongside contemporary responses to similar texts, all framed by a Lutheran service of Vespers.
A not-to-be-missed highlight is the Southeast premiere of Giles Swayne’s Magnificat I, a work inspired by the rhythms and calls of Senegalese ploughing songs. This piece, along with other works by living composers, offers a bold reimagining of what choral music can be.
