About this Event
The Lowlands are the ancestral and spiritual home of the Scotch Whisky Industry. Crown-sanctioned distillation of barley into spirit began in the Lowlands in 1495 at the now-ruined Lindores Abbey.
Following that point, the Lowlands had the highest concentration of working distilleries of any region in Scotland. This stands to reason, as the Lowlands have more people and more industry. Although time seems to have proven the enemy of distilling in the region, there were three new distilleries opened between 2015 and 2017: Clydeside in Glasgow, Lochlea in Kilmarnock, and Lindores Abbey Distillery in Fife. Bladnoch (founded 1817) was also acquired by a private interest in 2017, marking a milestone year for the industry.
