Friday nights in September we are delighted to welcome Louisa Amend back to the Nocturne stage for a four-week residency. This series' focus is storytelling through music, including: beautiful renditions of jazz standards by lyricists like Johnny Mercer and Cole Porter; instrumental compositions by artists such as Keith Jarrett, Kenny Barron, Chick Corea, and Antonio Carlos Jobim set with lyrics by others (and some by Louisa herself); and some impactful songs from outside the traditional jazz idiom, including Joni Mitchell, Allen Toussaint, Bill Withers, and Bonnie Raitt. Louisa will be joined by Tom Amend (piano), Steve Kovalcheck (guitar), Michael Rinko (bass), and Dru Heller (drums).
Louisa Amend is a vocalist and educator based out of Denver, Colorado. She graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 2016 with a Bachelors of Music Education and was a member of a numerous premier ensembles (one earning a Downbeat Magazine best of award) and opera productions produced by the university. After teaching music in public schools for a few years Louisa transitioned into working as a freelance musician and founding her own voice studio and she is quickly becoming a mainstay in the Denver jazz scene. In fall of 2022 and again in 2023, Louisa partnered with pianist Eric Gunnison to perform a special artist-in-residency at Nocturne honoring the late American jazz singer Carmen McRae - these shows were met with a truly marvelous reception.
