Joel Schumacher’s 1987 bisexual hot boy bloodsucking beach bonanza!“We don't ride with vampires.”
We’ve been waiting for this one! After writing THE WIZ (wild information, I know) and before deciding Batman’s suit needed nipples, Joel Schumacher directed one of the subtextually queerest mainstream films of the '80s. THE LOST BOYS is '80s homoeroticism distilled into its most potent form. When Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam Emerson (Corey Haim) move to the sleepy seaside town of Santa Carla, California, with their mother Lucy (Dianne Wiest), they're worried that life will suddenly become boring. Reeling from their parents' divorce and living with their mother’s eccentric father, Michael and Sam suddenly find their lives are anything but boring when they become the targets of a local hot boy vampire gang led by punky dangly earring-ed David (Kiefer Sutherland). Can Michael and Sam resist the thrall of homoerotic vampire ecstasy, or will they fall victim to the delicious seductions of the night?
Featuring an iconic '80s soundtrack, including a shirtless jacked saxophonist cover of "I Still Believe" and the banger “Cry Little Sister” by G Tom Mac, THE LOST BOYS is boy-on-boy queer-coded shenanigans at their finest. Some folks might argue with us that there is heterosexual romance in this film, but we disagree. I mean, every time they say the word “vampire,” it sounds like a gay slur, y’all. Sure, there’s always the incredible Star (Jami Gertz), but being drawn to a beautiful woman with giant hair isn’t straight – it’s actually super gay. Gays love big hair – it’s in our DNA. But for real though, THE LOST BOYS is Joel Schumacher at his most transparent; the dude wanted to make a movie about hot vampy boys and he did. And we’re not mad about it. Predating the brooding gaze of Edward Cullen, THE LOST BOYS was instrumental in bringing vampires one step further toward the sexy end of the sexy vs. scary spectrum, and we can’t wait to celebrate this camp classic with y’all on the big screen.
