We're showing the complete LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy back-to-back-to-back. And before you ask – yes, all three films will be the extended editions. So come prepared for a day-long event of unrivaled cinematic epicness as we showcase these spectacular films on the big screen.
THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (2001)
This is fantasy at its richest and most vivid. The eyes are nearly overwhelmed by the bone-crushing beasts, fiery pits, the majesty of the towering wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), the emerald green forests and purple-blue skies that spin across the screen. The screenplay is determinedly faithful to Tolkien's text, as it sends Frodo (Elijah Wood) and his friends Sam (Sean Astin), Pippin (Billy Boyd), and Merry (Dominic Monaghan) off in the direction of the terrifying volcanic Mount Doom, where they must dispose of a cursed ring passed down to Frodo by his cousin Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm). The tragic treasure, possessing extraordinary destructive powers, was forged by the dark lord Sauron ages ago and, should it fall into the wrong hands, it could spell the end of civilization. Getting rid of the ring is not easy, however – it can only be destroyed in the fires of the mountain where it was made.
THE TWO TOWERS (2002)
Peter Jackson presides over a number of extraordinary, bone-crunching battles, including the climactic storming of Helm's Deep, in which a few hundred mortals, elves, and a dwarf try to fend off an attack by tens of thousands of monstrous Uruk-hai, Easterlings, and the gruesome Orcs from the first movie. In addition, TOWERS works in an exorcism, collapsing dams, exploding fortresses, mutant elephants, swamps full of ghosts, bloodthirsty boar-like monsters, and a Gollum that's funny, frightening, and utterly fascinating to watch. TOWERS primarily belongs to Viggo Mortensen's roguishly dashing Aragorn, the wandering warrior and heir of the kingdom of Gondor, whose physical and emotional strength is tested throughout the story. You could hardly ask for more spectacle for your movie dollar.
THE RETURN OF THE KING (2003)
The Academy Award winner for Best Picture does a superb job of wrapping up the saga of the battle for Middle-earth, beginning with the origins of Gollum and continuing down the Paths of the Dead, the battle of the Pelennor Fields, and the incredible siege of Minas Tirith. The nearly impossible journey into the domain of the Dark Lord Sauron is made even more difficult by Gollum, whose schizoid personality is now almost out of control. "There is no going back," Frodo tells himself near the end. But that's just not so: students of fantasy and generations of moviegoers to come will be going back to the LORD OF THE RINGS films for many years to come – and what treasures they will find.
