We are offering a new worship service this year on December 21, the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. Blue Christmas services have become a new tradition in many congregations as a way to help those in difficult times during the holidays. While Advent is a season of hope and Christmas is a season of joy, not everyone feels hopeful or like celebrating. Grief, illness, aging, depression, loneliness, unemployment, and loss are magnified. Even those who are not struggling with losses may feel the stress of preparations and expectations around Christmas time. In this evening prayer service we seek to provide a time and place of solace during the often frenetic days surrounding the celebration of Christmas. We come together seeking healing and room to share our grief, sadness, loneliness or confusion when these emotions often feel out of place during the holidays.
In the Northern Hemisphere, December 21 is the winter solstice. It marks the shortest day of the year, the official start of winter. Tradition says that nature and all her creatures stop and hold their breath to see if the sun will turn back from its wanderings, if the days will lengthen and the earth will once again feel the sun's warmth. As we gather in the longest night of the year, we come seeking the return of light and hope.
During this service we will have prayer stations for candle lighting, written prayers, healing prayer, and silent mediation. We will sing Christmas songs and find the quiet joy of good news that comes even in the darkest of nights.
