Voting once every four year$ is not enough for a resilient and healthy democracy. Regardless of the outcome of the upcoming Council election$, its community democracy that matters now more than ever.
If you don’t feel represented by the existing political institutions (like many people we’ve spoken to recently), now is your chance to be part of something new, something genuine, and something different to top-down decision making.
🏡 🌴 🌎
What exactly is this:
Taking place on the unceded lands of the Widjabal Wia-bal People of the Bundjalung Nation, The Lismore People’s Assembly is for everyday people to come together, in a constructive and participatory format that supports everyone to share ideas and listen respectfully to each other as we answer a specific question: How can this community get everyone a home?
After a facilitated discussion in small groups, where every voice is heard and we deliberate to come up with ideas and solutions, we will then decide collectively what to do next.
✨✨✨
The topic of this People’s Assembly Meeting: 🏡 HOUSING - PART 2🏡
🏡 🌴 🌎
On August 10th fifty community members gathered and worked together to come up with the beginnings of a Lismore People’s Housing Policy. See here for what we came up with:
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/7xmf7Hmhqada14vP/
This time we are going to bring together the results from last assembly, as well as others held in the Northern Rivers by House You, as well as hear from planning staff from Lismore City Council, and continue our deliberation and democratic process.
🏡 🌊🏡

🎆 🎇 🌈
The big picture plan:
Across the world there is a massive divide between the decisions being made by political institutions and those in power, and the wishes of everyday people.
When we asked people across Lismore, ‘Do you feel that everyday people are represented by political institutions?’, the answer was a resounding ‘No’. This is where we are starting from.
We are part of a growing global movement, including Cooperation Hull in the UK and Cooperation Jackson in the USA, and the Humanity Project, that is keen to re-centre the community in decision-making.
We aim to hold monthly/bi-monthly People’s Assemblies in Lismore, and support people to do similar in their local areas, as we grow to a regional Northern Rivers People’s Assembly by mid next year. Within one year we aim to bring people across the continent together to deliberate on what’s important, in a continent-wide deliberation.

FAQ:
Q: Will this just be another talk-fest?
A: That depends on you! We are all co-creators of the Lismore People’s Assembly. We humbly bring our experience in facilitation to the People’s Assembly, and we have had training from deliberative democracy experts Mosaic Lab which we believe means we can make this process much more than just a regular meeting where a few voices dominate and we all leave no better off.
Furthermore, we are determined to work out next steps after the People’s Assembly meeting as a collective - we might come up with actions to take straight away.
Q: This is awesome, how can I get involved?
A: We meet every Thursday at 2pm online and in person for organising. Email [email protected] to get involved. We also do regular outreach at the Lismore Farmers Market on Thursdays and Saturdays. Come look for people with clipboards there and join the convo :)
Please feel free to post questions in the discussion if you are unsure and we will endeavor to answer
