THE LION IN WINTER is a darkly comic tale of one very special Christmas in the history of the English empire. A meeting between some of the most famous royal names including Henry II, Richard the Lionheart (as a boy), “Magna Carta” King John (before he was king), and Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, alongside their matriculating and meticulous son, Geoffrey, who wage a battle of wits amongst themselves, and their royal guests, King Phillip of France and his sister, Alais. The heat is palpable in this frosty setting, and sparks fly as we watch an ailing family battle it out “Succession” style to the last drop of blood – metaphorically, of course!
