Free screening of Georgina Umney's 'The Lights Went Out' film with Q&AGeorgina Umney 's The Lights Went Out delves into the intricate connections between traditional and contemporary land ownership, contextualising Cornwall’s current housing crisis alongside its aristocratic legacy. Through a blend of archival material, video footage, screen recordings and photography, the work explores the human motivations behind mapmaking, the information maps reveal and conceal, and how this has come to shape our perception of the environments we inhabit today. Inspired by W. G. Sebald’s ‘ The Rings of Saturn, ’ the film follows a stream of consciousness on a brief journey nestled deep within the Fal Estuary. A seemingly unremarkable line on a map comes to reveal layers of historical, social, and communal context, entangled with the shifting patterns of both the landscape, and its cartography.
