The Light Out West: Screendance and Bay Area Avant-Garde Cinema 1940s-1950s
Travel back to the roots of screendance with this rare screening of archival dance films born from San Francisco’s post-World War II avant-garde movement. Centered around the “Art in Cinema” series once held at SFMOMA, The Light Out West is a historic film program uncovering early experiments that helped shape the future of dance on screen. With a focus on preservation and legacy, this program also highlights the importance of safeguarding our artistic heritage in an era of disappearing archives—a must-see for cinephiles, dance historians, and lovers of Bay Area culture.
