About this Event
Join us at the Peerless Rockville|Glenview Mansion Speaker Series for this book talk on a key architect of the Underground Railroad. Andrew K. Diemer of Temple University will discuss his book on the remarkable and inspiring story of William Still, a little-known abolitionist who dedicated his life to managing a critical section of the Underground Railroad in Philadelphia - the free city directly north of the Mason-Dixon Line - helping hundreds of people escape from slavery. Among William Still's passengers was a young girl from Rockville, Ann Maria Weems, who escaped from a slave trader in 1855 with the help of Still's network and visited Still in Philadelphia on her way to safety in Canada.
Peerless Rockville Historic Preservation Ltd. is supported in part by a grant from the City of Rockville and funding from the Montgomery County Government and the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County.
