We all know the name and the hospital that was named after him, but there is much more to find out! To mark the bicentenary of Cossham’s birth, John Stevens will tell us about this fascinating local man. Handel Cossham (1824-1890) was a coal mining pioneer in the East Bristol and South Gloucestershire areas and his talk will tell us about his working and business life, which led to his amassing a considerable fortune, plus his outside interests in the temperance movement, education and politics; he ended his life as Liberal MP for Bristol East, dying in the library of the House of Commons. We will also learn about Cossham Hospital, founded with money left in his will.
John Stevens was by profession a lawyer in government service but history has been a lifetime passion. He is particularly interested in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and has published an edition of the Bristol Poll Book of 1852 for the Bristol Record Society as well as contributing to the Transactions of the Bristol & Gloucestershire Archaeological Society.
