Simply put, there would be no Peace Lutheran Church were it not for the Apostle Paul. Paul says many things that make one cringe (about women, marriage, slavery) that send me hurrying to find out, “What did Paul mean?” Even so, we still wouldn’t be here were it not for him. At a time when the church was fighting for its life, Paul presents Jesus Christ in all of Christ’s present, universal, daily glory. He managed to keep the first Christians focused on the wonder of God’s grace in Christ. He kept quarreling Christians together in the church and, whenever there has been new vitality in the church, the rediscovering of Paul’s discoveries has often been behind them.
In July and August, we will take a look at the life and ministry of Paul, beginning with how Church Enemy Number One changed and became Paul, the great missionary to the Gentiles—us—and go from there. —Pastor Mark Nelson
