THE DETAILS: Gestural painting involves working with dramatic, loose, bold strokes. Felicia van Bork is known for her 10- and 20-minute gestural portrait paintings. (Instagram @feliciavanbork) Felicia teaches this two-day, hands-on workshop in her witty and empathetic style. There are many laughs and "aha moments" for everyone, and nobody feels left behind. She systematically instructs us in her technique, showing us how to use the minimum number of marks to paint a portrait in acrylic. She brings together the essentials of portrait painting—proportions of the head, color mixing and brush handling—and then guides us, stroke by stroke, through our “big brush” painting exercises. Felicia says that achieving a strong likeness with loose brushwork depends on finding correct proportions from the outset. She shows us how to do this, and she also teaches the use of bold values and subtle color contrasts so that we can put “the right color in the right place, right from the beginning.”

Her oil portraits of professors, philanthropists and college presidents are to be found in the collections of academic institutions across the country, and her new, dazzlingly vibrant gestural portraits have been gaining attention as she shares and teaches her acrylic portrait technique. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, and she is the Coordinator of the Printmaking Lab at the McColl Center in Charlotte.
