Sir Peter Thornton Biography
Sir Peter Thornton KC is a distinguished legal expert and the first Chief Coroner of England and Wales. He became a Queen’s Counsel in 1992 and helped found and lead the prestigious Doughty Street Chambers.
As a Special Coroner, Sir Peter oversaw the high-profile Ian Tomlinson inquest in 2011. In September 2012, he was appointed Chief Coroner of England and Wales, a role he held until October 2016, before retiring at the mandatory age for the office.
In 2017, he was knighted for services to justice and coroners’ administration. He continues to champion legal education and reform as a Visiting Professor at King’s College London, a member of the parliamentary Independent Expert Panel, and an international trainer for coroners.
Sir Peter is also a prolific author. His most recent book is:
The Later Years: The Simple Guide to Organising the Rest of Your Life (Bedford Square Publishers, 27 February 2025) — a practical handbook addressing wills, powers of attorney, pensions, inheritance, scams, care considerations, and administrative steps before and after death.
He has also written extensively on civil liberties, forensic science, public order, and more, contributed to leading legal textbooks, and is a frequent broadcaster on legal matters.
