About this Event

Art is known for capturing reality. It can make people feel seen and heard. This has been the case for The Last Block Association, which was one of the first shows in Black Spectrum Theatre’s 54th (going on 55th) season. The story has resonated with multiple block association presidents and members overall. Written and directed by Carl Clay, the show returns by popular demand for six dates: Thursday, May 2nd through May 4th and May 9th through Saturday, May 11th.

“This is really a homage to the history of some of the most famous block associations, not only in the Queens community, but in the Brooklyn community as well,” Clay said. “And we’ve come to a time where a lot of those structures that we knew back in the day are falling apart, and in some cases getting bigger.”

Block Association follows Pauline, portrayed by Ashlee Danielle, who inherited her late father’s role as block association president. She struggles but is determined to keep her block together despite crime, squabbles, changing demographics, hookups, and mysterious new neighbors. The show, which tackles important issues, is also laced with humor.

In Block Association’s initial run during late October, notable guests included New York senators James Sanders, Jr. and Leroy Comrie; Queens councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers; and founder of the Greater Triangular Association, Lauretta Humphrey. Special guests for this run are to be announced.

Showtimes are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7pm with the exception of the first Saturday show on May 4th, which is slated for 2pm.
