The lecture presents a survey of wide-ranging and iconoclastic body of work produced across the course of an academic and professional career in landscape architecture. The lecture revolves around material selected from the associated exhibition ‘Odds & Ends’ which draws on Weller’s recent monograph 'An Art of Instrumentality' (ORO Editions, 2023), and his forthcoming book 'To the Ends of the Earth: A Grand Tour for the 21st century' (Birkhauser, 2024).

ODDS & ENDS: The Landscape Architecture of Richard Weller

This exhibition showcase will be set in two parts. The first, 'Odds' presents a survey of his wide-ranging design practice and academic research and the second, 'Ends' shows 120 places drawn from his forthcoming book 'To the Ends of the Earth: A grand tour for the 21st century'.
Supported by text from Associate Professor Jillian Walliss, this two-part exhibition charts the extraordinary breadth and depth of Weller’s creative work over a 40-year period.

In this floor talk, Richard Weller will lead viewers through a sweeping summation of his career, candidly discussing the ideas, motivations and methods behind his internationally acclaimed work and engaging as much as possible with comments and questions from attendees. Chaired by Naomi Barun, Victorian President, Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA).
About the speaker
Richard Weller is professor and former chair of landscape architecture and urbanism at the University of Pennsylvania, where he (together with Fritz Steiner) established the Ian L. McHarg Center for Urbanism and Ecology. He is co-founder (with Tatum Hands) and former creative director of LA+ Interdisciplinary Journal of Landscape Architecture, founding director (with Vladimir Sitta) of Australian design firm Room 4.1.3., and holds adjunct professorships at the University of Western Australia and the University of New South Wales.
