This September, we've got THREE staff birthday picks coming to Art House Cinema and Pub! Up first is our marketing manager, Spencer Gallagher (hey, that's me!) and he (I?) is (am??) celebrating with a screening of one of his (my???) favorite strange films, that being Ken Russell's 1989 cult horror film, THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM, playing Tuesday, September 23rd!A bizarre and seductive film of high strangeness, THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM sees the visionary director behind Altered States and The Devils adapting the book of the same name from legendary author Bram Stoker with a visual style totally unique to him and a serpentine sexuality that is graciously accompanied by weird creatures, practical effects, colorful lighting, and occult rituals! Seeming to exist in a time and place all its own, I think few films of any genre capture the specific atmosphere and seductive strangeness as this one, which is I invite you to see THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM as my birthday pick this year!
When young archaeologist Angus Flint uncovers the large and mysterious skull of an unknown creature on a rural farm, he deduces that it must have belonged to the D'Ampton Worm, a mythical beast supposedly slain generations ago by an ancestor of the current Lord D'ampton. As word of his discovery bleeds into the local community, the strange and seductive occultist Lady Sylvia Marsh begins to seek out Angus and the skull, alluding to the idea that the D'Ampton worm may still be living somewhere in the region.
