Come along, meet and chat to others from your community, and then create your own photographic self-portrait as part of The Laindon Bench Project. It’s a simple process: everything will be set up for you - all you need to do is to press the remote switch. You can pose on your own or with others, and be as serious, fun or creative as you like. At the end of the project, the self-portraits will be exhibited on the site of the old Laindon Shopping Centre, creating an outdoor exhibition celebrating friendships, community and the importance of public spaces and benches. You'll also receive a digital version of your portrait at the end of the project.
Drop-in at any time during the pop-up sessions, tickets not required but let us know you'll be coming along by reserving a ticket on Eventbrite.

About the artist, Mark Massey
Mark is a photographer and graphic designer from Southend, interested in both portraiture and documentary photography within the local community. In 2021, Creative Basildon commissioned his ‘New Town Portraits’ project as part of their ‘Open Lab’ programme in Basildon. In other projects, he has documented the Essex side of the Thames estuary, challenged the Essex Girl stereotype with a series of portrait collaborations, and has worked with various arts groups in Southend and Thurrock. Recently he worked on a series of portraits with a local sight loss charity, and is currently working on a personal project inspired by parkrun community running events.
The Laindon Bench Project has been commissioned by Creative Basildon's Laindon Voices and is supported through funding from Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places Programme.
