The Klezmatics in Sony Hall, NYC January 8
The legendary New York Yiddish band The Klezmatics has changed the face of contemporary Jewish culture through their uniquely original and expansive work in the fields of klezmer music and Yiddish song, blending klezmer’s aching East European Jewish tunes with raucous Latin stomps, wild jazz riffs and provocative Balkan, Middle Eastern, African and American rhythms. Their career achievements span 13 full-length recordings, countless international concert tours and festivals across five continents, and collaborations with renowned icons of music, theater, television, radio, cinema and dance. The Klezmatics are the subject of an acclaimed documentary film (On Holy Ground) and are the recipients of numerous international accolades, including a 2006 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album. During their nearly 40 years together the Klezmatics have collaborated with such brilliant artists as violinist Itzhak Perlman, Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner, revered Israeli vocalist Chava Alberstein, and acclaimed American singer/songwriters Holly Near, Natalie Merchant and Arlo Guthrie, as well as many other prominent artists working within multiple genres.
In December 2024 The Klezmatics will visit various U.S. cities with their Toward the Light Hanukkah tour and release their Happier Joyous Hanukkah EP featuring previously unreleased tracks as well as covers of Klezmatics-Woody Guthrie holiday songs performed in tribute by some of their favorite musical colleagues.
To usher in the new year, New Yorkers will have a chance to catch The Klezmatics, together with special guests, on January 8 at Sony Hall, one of the city’s premier concert venues. The event will mark the official start of the band’s 40th anniversary celebration, culminating in the 2026-7 season.
The band is planning the re-issue of many of its landmark recordings augmented with previously unpublished material, while new albums are also in the works, including a tribute collection featuring an impressive roster of The Klezmatics’ long-time musical partners and friends. A worldwide anniversary tour is on the horizon, as is unique collectible merchandise and an exhibition of artifacts curated from the band’s four-decade history, in addition to an updated documentary film and career-spanning coffee-table book.
