Sharing borders with Iraq and Jordan to the north and Yemen, Oman and our very own UAE to the south and east, this country of over 30 million people has often been unavailable to the weekend adventurer, until now.
The walled city of Al-Ula, founded along the “Incense Road” in the 6th Century BC, where the residents built their homes in dense configuration to better fortify against invaders, and presided over by the Nabateans for hundreds of years. The Nabataeans, an ancient Bedouin tribe that wandered the Arabian Desert for centuries and eventually made their capital at the site of Petra also built their largest settlement in the south in what is now the Saudi Kingdom. This ancient biblical city will be our starting point for exploring the spectacular sandstone rock formations nearby.
A short distance from the city are endless sandstone rock formations filled with ancient pictographs, petroglyphs and ancient ruins of the Dedanites, pre-dating even the reign of the Nabateans. We will trek the ancient incense route through this dramatic Martian landscape!
If you are craving to become one of the first Saudi explorers, you are warmly invited to join us for on one of the first chapters of Saudi TREKKUPS!
