About this Event

Parents and Carers Peer Group

Each week our Peer Support Worker will guide us through learning, sharing and discussion on topics relevant to our children’s mental health and emotional wellbeing.

MIFWA and The Kid’s Hub invite you to join us for a free interactive peer group for parents and carers of children aged 0-12.

Come together with others interested in supporting their children’s mental health and wellbeing, guided by our Family and Carer Peer Support Worker. Each week we’ll explore a different issue affecting families, in a non-judgmental and empathetic way. There will also be opportunities to connect with, and learn from, each other as we share our lived experience.

You’re welcome from 9.15am for a cuppa, the group will start at 9.30am and run until 11am.

Register for every week or just those that interest you:

·16th October: Understanding our child’s emotions and our own

In our first week we’ll explore what emotional regulation means, how it develops in our children and how we can support them as they move towards self-regulation. We’ll also consider how we can support our own emotional and mental health as carers and how this influences our relationship with our children.

·23rd October: Using play for connection and cooperation

Do you inwardly groan every time your child wants you to play? Do you feel guilty if you don’t and annoyed if you do? You’re not alone! How can we play in a way that works for adults and kids? Let’s talk and share about the challenges of play, why it’s worth the effort and how to play in a way that brings more joy, connection and ease to family life.

·30th October: Navigating limits and requests - saying no (and yes) to our kids

Saying ‘no’ can seem like one of the most difficult parts of being a parent. Join us this week to develop your skills in holding empathetic boundaries and building cooperation for life’s non-negotiables. We’ll also explore how to empower our children by identifying opportunities to offer choice and say ‘yes’ more often. We’ll have time to share about what works in our families, what doesn’t and how we can come together with our kids to meet everyone’s needs.

·6th November: Neurodivergence, developmental differences and your child

This week we’ll explore the neurodiversity movement, neurodivergence, and how we can affirm our children’ differences and accept them for who they are. We’ll share experiences, discuss common challenges, and learn ways to support our children to be themselves in a world that that isn’t always built for them. We are all neurodiverse, so this group welcomes everyone to the discussion.

·13th November: School, mental health and your child

Sometimes we find that our child’s school isn’t providing the most supportive environment for their mental health. This may lead to them being reluctant, or even unable, to go to school. This week we’ll consider the demands that our children face at school and how well they are able to meet them, as well as possible solutions, resources and supports.

·20th November: The Low Demand parenting style - could it help your family?

Low Demand Parenting, developed by Dr Naomi Fisher, offers an alternative parenting approach particularly suited to sensitive and neurodivergent children. If you have sometimes struggled with mainstream parenting advice, join our Peer Support Worker, who has used this style with her own children, for an overview. As always, there will be plenty of time for connecting and sharing about our own varied parenting experiences.

You can register for the whole series or just the sessions that interest you!

This in-person event will take place at the Kids Hub on 1 Watertank Way, Midland WA 6056.

Crèche services may be available by registration only. Please specify the number of children and their ages when registering.
