Join Steam Incorporated on this special excursion train between Whanganui & Kai Iwi. Behind a combination of steam & diesel motive power, explore the famed stretch of track north of Whanganui!Board our heritage train comprising of our steel carriages at Whanganui’s Taupo Quay, before we trundle up the branch line to Eastown behind our heritage Da class diesel electric locomotive. As we snake our way through Whanganui enroute to Eastown, we cross the Whanganui River – the country’s third longest river.
At Eastown, the drivers change ends and with Ja 1271 at the front of the train, we make headway northwest through the outskirts of Whanganui enroute to Kai Iwi, heading once again across the Whanganui River. The fearsome Westmere Bank lies between us and Kai Iwi. This is a steep hill with a gradient of 1 in 35 on our ascent (that is 1 metre climbed for every 35 metres travelled horizontally) and up to 1 in 39 on our descent down the other side. Here you should really hear the engine working!
Just before we come into Kai Iwi, we are travelling on a relatively new part of the line called the Kai Iwi deviation. Completed in 2008, the deviation is just under a kilometre long and bypasses the old No.4 tunnel. See if you can spot some of the old route on our trip down the hill!
At Kai Iwi, it is now the Da’s turn to make the climb towards the top! After dropping back down the hill towards Whanganui, we drop you back off at Taupo Quay to complete a fun few hours of train travel!
