Monthly book club with a twist - we have no set book to read, instead come and talk about whatever book you're currently reading!
About this Event

The Joyful Activists x Book Club!

Welcome to our monthly Book Club, where we come together to talk about the books that we love, books that inspire us, books that make us think differently, and books that we can't put down! There is no set text to read; come along and talk about whatever you're reading that month.

Description

The Joyful Activists is a global community of activists, charity workers and humanitarians coming together to look after our physical, mental and emotional health.

Why is there no set book?

Book clubs are great, but they can also feel a bit inaccessible when there's a new book to read each month:

  • We might not be able to afford to buy a new book
  • We might not have time to finish it before the book club
  • We might read things at a different pace than others
  • We might feel nervous about what to say ("What if I'm the only one who didn't like the book?")
  • We might feel like we're in an English Literature exam ("What if I can't think of something 'intelligent' to say?"
  • We might miss a month of book club and then worry we're 'behind'

So we want to create a book club where you can bring any book you're reading, and talk about it in whatever way you'd like. Want to talk about the plot? The underlying moral? What it has made you think differently about? How it reminds you of other books you've read? Want to come along to listen and get book recommendations from other people? All of it is welcome.

Tickets

Tickets are £5. Book Club will take place on Zoom; the joining link will be in your confirmation email from Eventbrite once you've purchased your ticket.

What books can I talk about?

Anything! Note that our community is inclusive of gender, ethnicity, race, sexuality, religion, ability and culture. We're feminist, anti-racist and trans-inclusive, so our community will reflect those values. We welcome conversations (and book recommendations) on how to be better allies to all marginalised communities.
