Program Description:
How does a girl born in Ukraine and raised in Milwaukee, WI, travel a path that will lead her to become Prime Minister of Isreal?
In the pantheon of illustrious national leaders there exists an even more elite subgroup, female heads of state, among whom stands one Jewish woman: Golda Meir. A direct, no-nonsense politician who participated in Israel's governance from its independence onward, Golda Meir served as Israel's first and only female Prime Minister from 1969 to 1974.
Pioneer, visionary, risk-taker, indefatigable fund-raiser, eloquent advocate, she was an activist of the first order, and, as one of the founders of the Jewish state, a woman whose life story is central to the story of modern Zionism. Presidents and kings found her willfulness charming, while her grandmotherly appearance and plain-spoken personal style endeared her to ordinary people around the world. In her time, Golda was as admired as Queen Elizabeth, was named the “Most Admired woman in America”, and was hailed by world leaders as an extraordinary woman. However, her legacy in Israel was more controversial, as many Israelis blamed her for being caught unprepared in the Yom Kippur War, leading to a decline in her popularity and her resignation in 1974.
In this informative, entertaining, program, developed by Jessica Michna, she explores Meir’s rather circuitous route to world leadership and fame. The journey is a fascinating one, filled with joy, sorrow, seriousness and humor. Golda, portrayed by Jessica Michna, will tell you the story in her own words.
As a part of the program for this enlightening day, the Woman's Club has invited students from the Golda Meir school to do a Table Top presentation of their chosen artifacts and historical documents from their studies. Please plan to arrive at 10:30AM to attend this lively discussion with these knowledgeable Golda "experts". The program will then proceed as planned at 11:30 am.
