Islamic geometric patterns appeared in the Muslim world in the 9th century CE and spread throughout the Middle East, North Africa, Spain, and the Indian subcontinent. Today, the influence of this art form is seen in various architecture, artworks, iconography, and textiles across the globe, including here in Southern California and at UCI. Yet their origins, aesthetics, and mathematical sophistication are likely underappreciated.
In this three-part event, we will explore (1) the various ways in which Islamic patterns emerge; (2) how Islamic geometry combines mathematics, art, and spirituality; and (3) how digital media provides new ways of engaging with this art form. The event consists of two workshops and a panel discussion. Participants are free to attend any of the events but encouraged to attend them all! Up to 30 participants will be provided materials for the workshops on a first come first serve basis (with preference given to UCI undergraduates), but more are welcome to attend. Several competitions will be held during the workshop events with beautiful prizes for participants!
* From Points to Pixels: Algorithmic Islamic Art (Interactive Workshop) - April 22, 2024
Explore how Islamic patterns can be created using both traditional tools (i.e., compass and ruler) and modern digital tools. Participants will create their own physical and digital designs. Participants are encouraged to bring laptops or tablets.
* Tiles and Tessellations: The Meeting Point of Artisans and Mathematicians (Interactive Workshop) - April 29, 2024
Learn how Islamic tiling problems occupied the minds of mathematicians from the 10th century to today. Create your own tessellation using a set of tiles used in the 15th century with mathematical properties that have only recently been recognized in the West.
* Islamic Geometry from Different Angles: A Panel Discussion - May 6, 2024
Join us for a rich interdisciplinary discussion on the aesthetic, mathematical, and spiritual dimensions of Islamic geometry. Panelists include four international experts in Islamic geometry: Carol Bier (Historian), Eric Broug (Artist), Craig Kaplan (Computer Scientist), Samira Mian (Artist).
