The Inner Mirror: Yoga Psychology through Ashtavakra and PatanjaliThis training brings together two streams of yoga learning. The first is the method to know yourself through the Yoga Sutras, where we explore the psychology of the mind and emotions. The focus is on a deep study of the wisdom of Patanjali and Ashtavakra, who reveal the nature of the mind, the play of emotions, and the path to inner freedom.
The other is the practical exploration of backbends, where we work with the body, the breath, and the strength of the heart. Together they form a balanced program of 25 hours that nourishes both understanding and experience.
Part One: Yoga Psychology (12 hours)
Exploring the wisdom of the Yoga Sutras as a guide to understand the mind.
1. Foundations of yoga psychology: yogas citta vṛtti nirodhaḥ- yoga as stilling the movements of the mind. The four parts of mind: manas, buddhi, ahamkara, and citta.
2. Mental disturbances: the five vṛttis and the five klesas – ignorance, ego, attachment, aversion, and fear. Exploring these created patterns of suffering.
3. Practices for balance and changing mindset ,as ways to purify the heart.
4. Transformation and higher states: cultivating viveka, discernment, and moving towards integration of mind in Meditation. In depth work on meditation, and breath practices are included to make this wisdom alive.
Part Two: Asana and Pranayama (9 hours)
We study the body with care and respect, learning how to approach backbends safely and with strength, also understanding how backbends improve the mindset.
1. Fundamentals of backbends: the spine, the vertebrae, the shoulder girdle, the hip flexors, and the supporting muscles. Working to understand the restrictions in one part of the body affect another, such as tight hip flexors limiting shoulder movement.
2. Practical sequence: beginning with simple poses , moving gradually towards deeper poses like .
3. The art of balance: sthira sukham asanam – effort with ease, strength with softness.
Meditation (4 hours)
The third stream is meditation. Here we bring together philosophy and practice, guiding the mind into stillness and clarity. Meditation is introduced step by step, so that each student can experience directly the peace and light that yoga speaks of.
