LSE trio features Shruti Ramani - voice, Elisa Thorn - harp and Lisa Cay Miller - piano. This concert features selected Children Songs (originally for solo piano and arranged by Miller for the trio) by Chick Corea written "to convey simplicity as beauty, as represented in the Spirit of a child."
Shruti Ramani is an innovative and emerging artist in the Canadian Jazz scene. She hails from Mumbai, India where she secured a degree in Hindustani music under the mentorship of Dr. Ritu Johri from the Agra Gharana. She moved to Canada and acquired a Bachelor in Jazz Studies (Performance) with a specialization in voice from Capilano University. She leads a collaborative ensemble, Raagaverse, recently toured with the Ostara Project and performed with the NOW Orchestra with Douglas R. Ewart. Her original music is an eclectic combination of the Indian and Jazz traditions, fusing the two traditions to create dynamic pieces for large and small ensembles. Shruti has composed for the mixtophics Festival (string quartet) and Sister Jazz Orchestra.
Elisa Thorn is a harpist known for her distinct use of the instrument in many contemporary contexts from pop to jazz to experimental. An avid collaborator, she has many projects including HUE, Gentle Party and The Giving Shapes, and works alongside many artists such as Mauvey, Tonye Aganaba, and Loscil. Her music, which combines influences of post-rock, jazz, classical and indie, is propelled by two artistic objectives: firstly, how to create music that is abstract, honest and accessible; and secondly, how to play the harp in a way does not compromise sensitivity with it’s boldness, or aesthetic beauty with it’s curiosity.
Lisa Cay Miller is an is an improvising pianist who loves to collaborate in the moment. Miller creates music with her ensembles Q, Sleep Furiously, Hejira’s Brew, and with Vicky Mettler, Rapheal Foisy-Couture and Not for Proper (with Kenton Loewen). She has performed with many great musicians, including Nicole Mitchell, Douglas R. Ewart, Butch Morris, Jessika Kenney, Eyvind Kang, Ig Henneman, Michael Moore, Michael Vatcher, Wilbert de Joode, Anne La Berge, Jasper Stadhouders, Peggy Lee, Joshua Zubot and JP Carter. Miller’s compositions have been premiered by the Flat Earth Society, de Bijloke ensemble (Belgium) theTetzepi Bigtet (Amsterdam), mmm… (Tokyo), NME, Pianorquestra (Brazil), Ensemble SuperMusique, le GGRIL, Quatuor Bozzini, Vancouver New Music, Standing Wave, Jesse Zubot, Turning Point Ensemble, Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa and the Hard Rubber Orchestra (Canada).
