The Immigrant Story, in collaboration with The Conversation Project at Willamette University, presents The Immigrant Story Live—an evening of live storytelling, music, and dance celebrating the lived experiences and cultural traditions of Oregonians.The program opens with three personal stories shared by individuals who call Oregon home, offering reflections on community, family, and belonging through firsthand experiences.
After a brief intermission, the evening comes alive with the vibrant rhythms of mariachi music and traditional dance, featuring the captivating Gemanereida Barragan-Cruz, a finalist in the 26th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza National Vocal Competition. She is accompanied and supported by the acclaimed ensemble Mariachi Tradición and Alumni, under the creative direction of award-winning director Leslie Núñez of the Forest Grove High School Mariachi Band. The evening will also feature a spectacular Ballet Folklórico Tlanese performance by Salem’s Casa de la Cultura Tlanese. The music and dance, carried through generations of Mexican tradition, celebrate a vibrant heritage and the joy of a community whose artistry continues to shine and uplift everyone who experiences it.
This event highlights storytelling, music, and shared culture, showcasing the voices, traditions, and creativity that contribute to Oregon’s rich cultural landscape.
