About this Event
We are excited to welcome you to our Autumn Art Festival, a chance to get up close and personal with our art collection, featuring music, live performances, discussions alongside vibrant food and drink.
We’ve had a lost year of exhibitions, and in order to best celebrate each and every one with the widest audience, we will be opening our house to the general public for a night to remember.
Exhibitions:
Am I Asking for Miracles Here?
The group show responds to Barnabas’ function as a woman’s hostel since WWII, titled after a poem written by one of the women that lived in the House. Wide in the scope of disciplines, the show consists of drawings and textiles, referencing mediums used during art sessions. The women who passed through the doors of the House were often vulnerable, affected by circumstances of abuse, the disintegration of families, mental illness, and trauma. Parallel to these challenges, the House also formed a sense of sisterhood, celebration, and growth.
By allowing womxn to inhabit a space within which they dominated, struggled, and flourished, this exhibition will unearth their unexplored narratives through the contemporary perspectives of womxn.
Soho Faces
An integral part of the portrait photography of John Claridge, an enduring and influential figure in British photography for over half a century.
These images trace the landscape of Soho through the faces of characters who have frequented two of its key institutions, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and the French House. Claridge’s lens appears to record inner stories even as it captures the sitters’ faces. These works, spanning 1960s – 2011, are brought together in a setting that is a Soho character itself. The House of St Barnabas has stood unmoved at the corner of Soho Square since the 1700s as if propped up at the bars these individuals often took up residence.
Smile
London-based local artist GREYGREY conceived and created #OHelloSunshine, the giant tubular rainbow monument now situated in Soho Square, honouring Soho’s reputation as the heart of London’s LGBTQ+ community. Alongside the public sculpture, GREYGREY has taken over a room at the house to display a series of ‘SMILES.’ We are also excited to announce we will be releasing a limited edition of 200 rainbow SMILE archival prints in support of the House of St Barnabas and the Terrence Higgins Trust, supported by Jealous Gallery.
Accompanying the exhibitions, is a vibrant music programme inspired by displays, exhibitions and artworks in our collection.
Expect live Jazz, spoken word and more from:
