About the Artist:
Erik Ravelo has made his mark in the art world with his bold, controversial campaigns that intersect art and activism. Known for addressing pressing societal issues, he gained international recognition with his work, The Untouchables, which tackles child abuse and exploitation. His campaigns with the UNHATE Foundation and United Colors of Benetton have ignited global conversations, particularly his 2012 "Unhate" campaign, which won the Grand Prix for Press at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Additionally, his collaboration with Amnesty International in "Behind the Pandemic" projected a critical view of governmental responses during the COVID-19 crisis in Latin America.
About The Exhibition
Ravelo’s work extends beyond visual art; it is an urgent call to action against the injustices and inequalities of our world. His bold style juxtaposes beauty with brutality, creating an intense narrative that confronts viewers with the human cost of repression, displacement, and violence. This exhibition features a range of his works, including pieces exploring the hardships faced by Cuban immigrants, the horrific realities of gender violence, and an iconic piece from The Untouchables series.
In his Cuban immigrant series, Ravelo captures the pain of exile and the struggle for freedom, drawing on his own experiences growing up in Cuba and the diaspora stories of those displaced by political and social turmoil. His poignant portrayals highlight the disconnect between identity and place, reflecting resilience amidst adversity.
Through his intricate Cardboard Madonnas, Ravelo pays tribute to women lost to the horrors of femicide. His interactive installations shed light on the lives stolen by gender violence, forcing society to confront these tragedies that often go unnoticed.
