Cantankerous, unpopular classics teacher (Paul Giamatti) at a New England School in the 1970s, is forced to stay on campus over Christmas to baby-sit the few pupils with nowhere to go. An unlovable man he forms an unlikely bond with a bright, abrasive boy and with the school cook, whose son recently died in Vietnam. A touching film, very funny at times, full of melancholy humour.
