THE HIDING PLACEby Jeff Whitty
Directed by James Sanguinetti
A quirky romantic comedy from Jeff Whitty, (Tony-winning writer of the musical hit Avenue Q) The Hiding Place showcases the tumultuous relationship between Myra, a struggling playwright/waitress and Karl, a popular (and married) novelist with his own frustrations. The two embark upon a secret letter writing affair, leaving notes in a secret spot in downtown Manhattan. As their hidden exchange grows more involved and abruptly ends, we see the effects their secrets have on everyone in their radius.
Jumping back and forth in time over seven years, The Hiding Place satirizes the world of art, letters, and theatre in mid ‘90s Manhattan, while dramatizing the thwarted passion that lies in the hearts of artists everywhere. “Charming and funny,” said Backstage, while the Los Angeles Times called the play “a diverting portrait of people who tell themselves lies in pursuit of truth on the page.”
