The Visual & Performing Arts Division of Gulf Coast State College presents The Heretical Body, by Carrie Ann Baade. This exhibit brings together a selection of works that are grounded in collage and historical painting techniques to examine the body as a site of belief, power, and transformation. Collage functions here as both method and metaphor, creating sites of syncretism: the merging of belief systems, visual codes, and cultural residues. Through acts of fragmentation and reassembly, she proposes a creative state in which new mythologies, identities, and modes of seeing emerge. The "heretical” body that emerges is not simply oppositional, but generative in its ability to absorb, mutate, and persist.Carrie Ann Baade is an internationally exhibiting painter and professor of painting and drawing at Florida State University. She has exhibited at major art fairs, including the LA and SF Art Fairs and Art Capital in Paris, as well as in museums across Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States.
Baade has received numerous accolades, including the Halo Fellowship Award, the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs Individual Artist Fellowship, and the Delaware Division of the Arts Award for Established Artist in Painting. Her work has been featured in Forbes and art publications such as Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, and American Art Collector.
Baade holds an MFA in Painting from the University of Delaware and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, with additional studies at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy. She continues to redefine narrative painting, challenging artistic conventions and inspiring both her students and the contemporary art world.
The exhibit runs from February 27 to April 3, with an opening reception on the evening of February 27, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Professor Baade will give a gallery talk during the opening reception.
